Dear Parents,
Khanacademy.org is a website that anyone can use free of charge. It is an educational website where children can watch a video on a particular Math concept, then do some practice problems on that concept. This website is unique because once your child shows mastery in a concept, many additional concepts open up for your child to practice. For example, once your child shows mastery with the Addition 1 section, then, he/she is able to go to Addition 2, Subtraction 1, Multiplication 1, or Number Line. Your child does not have to watch the instructional video in order to begin the practice questions on the concept chosen. However, if your child is going to complete problems on a concept that is unfamiliar, I recommend having your child watch the video first. This website can be used as a way to challenge your child in Math. It can also be used to reinforce concepts your child is struggling with.
In order to get started, log on to khanacademy.org. It will ask you to log in using a Google account or a Facebook account. If you don’t have either of these, you can click under the Google sign to create a Google account. In order to do this, you just need an email address. It’ll ask you a few questions as you set up your Google account. Once your Google account has been set up, you’ll need to go into your email account and open a confirmation email from Google to verify your email address. Once you’ve taken these steps, you are ready to practice on the website.
Now go back to khanacademy.org and login by clicking on the Google sign. Once you are logged on, go to the very bottom of the home page and click on ADD A COACH. It will ask you to enter the COACH ID. My coach ID is: [email protected]. After adding me as your child’s coach, I’ll be able to see the areas your child has mastered, as well as all of the concepts they’ve completed practice on.
If you choose to begin using this website, please have your child begin practicing in the Addition 1 section. Once they’ve completed this section successfully, many different concepts will open up. As this website is new to me, I’d love feedback on your usage.
Sincerely,
Stacie Dixon
